Media regulation

The definition for media regulation is the control or guidance of mass media by governments and other bodies. This means that videos placed on the internet can be taken off of specific websites such as YouTube. If a video is offensive or explicit towards the public then the government have a right to take the video down and YouTube will remove it when requested or reported. Removing the video from this site may not resolve the issue as the video will be on other platforms to view on however, will not be on official sites such as YouTube.

In the TV industry are accountable to OFCOM. OFCOM is the communications regulator in the UK, their role is to regulate the TV, radio, mobiles and postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate. This means that they decide whether or not the broadcasters have broken the agreements in their contract when they signed for their licence to broadcast what they want.

Music videos also undergo the same rules and regulations as videos and TV shows, however some music videos did not follow these rules and therefore was taken down by OFCOM for not meeting the requests. One example of this is Robin Thickes's song called 'Blurred lines'. This song caused huge controversy in the media due to a high extent of nudity as well as being seen as sexist due to the lyrics in the song saying how men get women into bed. This video was banned but then the producers of the song released the same song and lyrics but with a slightly different video which contained less nudity in it.

Case study of director

Hello,

I will be doing my case study director on the song No Type, this was a song by Rae Sremmurd in 2014 which was directed by Max Hilva, it has had around 466 million views on YouTube. The song relates to him saying that he likes to live his life the way he wants and won't let anyone make him live it differently, stating 'I make my own money so I spend it how I like', this shows his consideration of others and his attitude towards them.

When this song was first released in September 2014 the audience of hip hop didn't recognise the names of Max Hilva and Rae Sremmurd but they soon got to know them as a few months down the line Rae released more songs and created 'Black Beatles' which became a worldwide hit across the world. However Max Hilva was not the director of this song and instead directed a different song called 'Hit it' with Chad B, both songs are within the same genre of hip hop but Max Hilva displays that he is able to work with different artists to release a hit music song and video.

All music directors should have to ability and willingness to work with more than one music artist, this shows that Max has this ability to work with Chad B and Rae Sremmurd and that's just two music artists right there. Who knows what music artists Max Hilva will be working with in the future.

Genre theories

During the course of the year our class have been taught numerous media theorists, here are some descriptions of some of the theorists we learnt about in recent lessons:

John Hartley (1994) - This theorist tells us that he argues that genres are agents of ideological closure and limit potential of a given text. This means that music genres restrict the lengths that a text could go to through categorising it into a specific genre.

Robert Hodge and Gunther Kress (1988) -
These theorists explain that genres control the behaviour of producers of certain texts as well as the expectations of possible consumers. Explaining that the production of certain text can be changed through the use of genres and the way they are put into categories.

John Fiske (1987) -  This time the theorist says that 'generic conventions embody the crucial ideological concerns of the time in which they are popular'. In simpler terms this means the conventions express the issues with ideas raised in a particular time in which a genre is at a high point in popularity.

Rick Altman (1999) - This theorist gives an argument based on there being no such thing as a 'pure' genre in the present. He explains that all genres are progressive and will change over time. Also arguing that genres are only surviving now due to hybridisation of different genres or genres borrowing from one another and being more difficult to categorise so that they are individually unique.
